EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - September 2004 -- International Rectifier, IR®(NYSE: IRF), a world leader in power management technology, today announced the Q101-qualified IRF2804S-7P, a 40V, 1.6mOhm HEXFET® power MOSFET rated at 160A in a D2Pak outline. This specification makes the IRF2804S-7P ideal for heavy-duty, high-current automotive applications such as electronic power steering (EPS), 14V integrated starter alternator (ISA) systems and advanced alternator active rectification.

A standard three-lead D2Pak is limited to 75A to 100A, depending on lead cross-section and manufacturer's specification method. However, International Rectifier's new device has seven leads. The additional leads allow a larger wire-bond area, reducing die-free package resistance, enabling a device on-resistance specification of 1.6mOhm max at 25ºC.

"Packaging technology is the limiting factor in the current-carrying capability of discrete plastic packages. Automotive designers must use multiple discrete packages in parallel, or use a larger die in a module configuration. This invariably leads to increased system cost. IR's seven-lead D2Pak carries current on five leads in parallel rather than one, reducing lead temperature at the board level. This increases solder joint reliability and doubles the current handling capability compared to a standard three-lead package," said Anthony Murray, International Rectifier Technical Marketing Manager, North America Automotive Components.

The IRF2804S-7P is an ideal replacement for multiple D2Pak devices well as larger through-hole package devices. In addition, repetitive avalanche (Ear) is characterized on the data sheet and guaranteed up to maximum junction temperature (Tj-max), especially useful for automotive applications.
