International Rectifier's New Robust 1200V Control ICs Simplify Industrial Motor Drive Design, Reducing Design Cycle

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. June 2004 - International Rectifier, IRŪ (NYSE: IRF), a world leader in power management technology, today introduced the 1200V-rated IR2214 and IR22141 high voltage integrated circuits (HVICs) for industrial motor drive control. IR's 1200V-rated HVICs can be safely used as a single-part solution in high voltage industrial systems for protection circuits as well as high- and low-side switching. Competing devices rated at lower voltages typically use several components and bulky opto-couplers to accomplish the same switching and protection functions.

The new half-bridge gate driver ICs are designed specifically for 400VAC, three-phase AC induction motor drives using a 550V bus as well as brushless DC motors both from 10 horsepower to 20 horsepower. They simplify motor control design by integrating protection circuitry and eliminating the need for customized programming of protection algorithms. Both devices are the same, but the IR22141 includes a built-in active bias circuit that reduces external filtering. Output capability is 3A for high voltage, high current IGBTs, MOSFETs and integrated power modules. Typical applications include industrial automation systems, compressors, pumps and forklifts.

Both ICs include full soft-shutdown motor drive protection, detecting any de-saturation condition or under-voltage supply and sending fault feedback to the controller. Soft over-current shutdown avoids power node over- and under-shooting, protecting switching devices from damage. Special features include dedicated pins to trim turn-on, turn-off and soft shutdown switching time and synchronization of the fault when used in three phase bridge circuits.

"IR's exclusive high voltage integrated circuit (HVIC) technology increases functionality while decreasing external component count. For example, built-in de-saturation detect (diode biasing) enables short-circuit protection in single-phase applications and phase-to-phase short-circuit protection in multi-phase circuits with no need for additional circuitry, eliminating short-circuit protection microcode. All functions fit into a compact 24-pin package, simplifying integration into system boards," said David Tam, International Rectifier Vice President, Consumer and Industrial Sector Business.

Other benefits include a full range rail-to-rail output stage that allows up to 20V gate drive, which provides a larger safe operating area (SOA), compared to competing devices with 18V gate drive capability. In addition, the under voltage lockout with hysteresis minimizes the effects of power supply ripple and transients for safe gate drive and prevents IGBT overheating. Separate signal and output stage ground pins are included for emitter/source current sensing, matched delay outputs enable accurate switching control and the 3.3V CMOS logic interfaces are compatible with most microcontrollers.
