International Rectifier's Two Wales Facilities Achieve ISO 14001 Certification
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. April 2004 - International Rectifier IRŪ (NYSE: IRF), a world leader in power management technology, today announced that its manufacturing facilities in Newport and Swansea, Wales, have earned their ISO 14001 certification. ISO14001 is a series of voluntary environmental management standards intended to encourage organizations to systematically address the environmental impacts of their activities. It provides a quantified, objective measure of a company's daily concern for the environment and its efforts in reducing energy use, environmental impact and natural resource depletion.
Greg Takagi, Director of International Rectifier's Loss Prevention and Environmental, Health and Safety group said, "We are committed to environmental stewardship, from the energy-efficient power semiconductors we manufacture to the way we operate our business. ISO 14001 is a solid management tool we can use to assess and improve our performance to the Company's rigorous environmental goals." He added, "While our Welsh facilities have realized significant reductions in energy use, lead solder use and waste, they're extending their positive impact on the environment through the work being done with the Carbon Trust."
IR's Newport facility, working in conjunction with the United Kingdom's Carbon Trust, recently spearheaded the development of a system to detect and diagnose wasteful use of critical resources including gas, electricity and water. The system, now being piloted at facilities throughout the U.K., will help companies target energy-saving opportunities while taking into account variations in weather and production.
The Wales facilities join other International Rectifier facilities that have achieved ISO 14001 certification, including its El Segundo Calif. world headquarters, HEXFET America semiconductor fabrication facility in Temecula, California; Rectificadores Internacionales S.A. de C.V. in Tijuana, Mexico; International Rectifier Xian Corporation (IRXC), China and International Rectifier Automotive Systems GmbH in Krefeld Germany.
