International Rectifier Introduces Industry's First Dual Output, Two-Phase DC-DC Power Blocks

Single Package Simplifies On-Board DC-DC Converter Design for Computing and Communications Equipment

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. February 2004 - International Rectifier, IR®, NYSE: IRF), today introduced the industry's first dual output, two-phase DC-DC power blocks in single, easy-to-use BGA packages for synchronous buck applications. The new devices simplify design, reduce size and streamline computing and telecommunications power system time-to-market.

Today's advanced telecom, networking and server systems have as many as six voltage rails throughout the system board. As the demand to process more information increases, voltage rails must increase their current capability. The new iPOWIR™ iP1201 and iP1202 give computer and telecommunications designers a single device to supply two independent voltage rails, simplifying power supply design and reducing board space up to 59% compared to equivalent circuits made with discrete components. In addition, the new power blocks have no de-rating requirements up to 90 degrees Celsius circuit board and device case temperature, unlike other module solutions that require de-rating as much as 50% in similar environments.

"Today's new generation of power-hungry ICs is forcing the use of more complex power conversion than ever before. IR's newest additions to the iPOWIR product family offer the simplest path to the highest power density," said Gene Sheridan, Vice-President, Computing and Communications Business Unit at International Rectifier.

"The iPOWIR family illustrates IR's leadership in power management technology, offering much more than a simple integration of functions. Benchmark power semiconductors are matched with control ICs, optimized packaging and advanced system design to deliver highly predictable, highly efficient and completely guaranteed performance not before achievable with embedded discrete designs," Sheridan added.

The iP1201 and iP1202 are fully optimized for medium current synchronous buck applications requiring up to 15A dual output or 30A single output with an interleaved input. The new devices feature built-in, full-function PWM control and protection circuits with optimized power semiconductors and passive components to achieve high power density. Only an output inductor, input and output capacitors per channel and a few external components are required to build a complete dual output synchronous buck power supply.

Both the iP1201 and iP1202 are extremely flexible, allowing a wide input and output voltage range. The iP1201 covers input bus voltages from 3V to 5.5V and the iP1202 covers from 5.5V to 13.2V, with outputs as low as 0.8V and as high as 5V at full current.

The new devices provide over-voltage and over-temperature protection, while independent soft start for each output enables various power sequencing and tracking options. In addition, a single control pin on the new iP1201 and iP1202 enable an over-current hiccup or over-current latch function. The hiccup function is good for high reliability systems that require immediate output load voltage recovery once the short circuit is removed, thus maximizing system uptime and preventing the overall system power to be manually recycled.
