International Rectifier Introduces Low Voltage, High Current, High Efficiency DC-to-DC Converters for Space Satellite Applications

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. January 2004 - International Rectifier, IRŪ (NYSE: IRF), today introduces the Z Series family of 1.5V, 2.5V and 3.3V, single output DC-to-DC converters for geo-synchronous (GEO) and low earth orbit (LEO) satellite power systems.

Satellite power systems must supply proper voltage and current for complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) transistors and now BiCMOS, a combination of bipolar and CMOS. IR's new DC-DC converters employ synchronous output rectification and include the Z2801R5S, a 1.5V, 20A/30W device that delivers 79% efficiency. IR's "off-the-shelf" solution enables a shorter lead-time than custom designs, streamlining satellite project time-to-market.

"The Z Series is designed to fill the increasing demand for an off-the-shelf solution rather than a custom design for the low voltages required by advanced-technology systems used in new digital signal processors and digital logic products in space applications," said Bryan Rogers, vice president of sales and marketing, HiRel Products.

The new converters feature high radiation immunity, 100krad (Si) minimum total ionizing dose (TID) and single event effect (SEE) with LET (linear energy transfer) of greater than 80 MeV-mg-cm2. International Rectifier currently does not have a DSCC certified Radiation Hardness Assurance Program.

Surface-mount technology is used for the larger passive and power components, while hybrid devices are used for control circuits to simplify assembly and achieve a small footprint. The components used in the Z Series converters are selected and de-rated per the requirements of MIL-STD-975 and MIL-STD-1547.

Part Number Output Voltage(V) Output Current(A) Output Power (W) Efficiency (%)
Z2801R5S 1.5 20 30 79
Z2802R5S 2.5 20 50 83
Z2803R3S 3.3 15 50 85
