International Rectifier Introduces Two Revolutionary Digital Motor Control ICs That Eliminate Programming Tasks

New iMOTION™ Integrated Design Platform Digital ICs Slash Time-to-Market

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. November 2003 - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF) today introduces two additions to the iMOTION™ integrated design platform for Motor Control. The IRMCK201 and the IRMCK203 digital control ICs revolutionize the task of configuring Motor Control algorithms for different types of permanent magnet or AC induction motors and their position feedback devices.

Unlike traditional motor drive controls that rely on complex digital signal processors (DSP) or microprocessor control units (MCUs), the IRMCK201 and IRMCK203 contain a unique Motor Control Engine™ (MCE), which eliminates software programming. Motor Control products developed with the new digital control ICs and the iMOTION chip set can be brought to market faster, since commands are simplified to menu-driven selections.

The new devices have a wide range of high performance applications in the industrial and automation industries, such as dental drills, semiconductor wafer-handling equipment, pick and place machines and other precision Motor Control applications.

Digital Motor Control ICs

David Tam, Vice President, Consumer and Industrial Sector Business said, "There is no other single-chip Motor Control device on the market that enables the simplicity and the flexibility as the new IRMCK201 and IRMCK203. The new digital control ICs expand the portfolio of IR's industry leading iMOTION silicon solutions."

The IRMCK201 features an encoder feedback based closed loop current and velocity control for servo applications. In addition, the IRMCK201 is designed to be compatible with the rest of the iMOTION chip set, comprising of the IR2175 linear current-sensing IC, the IR2136 three-phase inverter-driver IC and the IRAM 6A to 20A integrated power modules. The IR2175 provides current feedback information and features a fast frequency output (FO = 130kHz) for high bandwidth and fast acceleration. Versatile space vector PWM with dead time insertion transfers information to and from the IC to the power devices with low loss, less noise and high efficiency.

The IRMCK203 is a digital control IC solution for sinusoidal current-based sensorless drives, and enables the design of ultra high-speed (100,000rpm) and wide speed range (>20:1) applications with sensor-less control. The sensorless feedback circuits combine with low loss space vector PWM and unique starting algorithm for permanent magnet AC motor, minimizing torque and ripple, increasing efficiency.

The new ICs include a fast, serial peripheral interface (SPI) port for connecting master/slave low- to medium-bandwidth external devices using two data lines and two control lines, and supports the asynchronous communication standards RS-232, RS-422, RS-485.
