International Rectifier Introduces Industry-First, One Amp Ultra Compact Low Dropout Regulator for Noise-Sensitive Circuitry

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. August 2003 - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF) today introduces the IRU1502-33, the industry's first fixed PMOS low dropout (LDO) linear regulator in a 6-pin MLPM package with a less than 0.6V dropout at 1A full load current. PMOS LDO regulators are excellent candidates for applications that require ultra low dropout without high quiescent current compared to bipolar pass element transistors.

The 6-pin MLPM package (3mm x 3mm x 1mm) has a very efficient thermal coefficient of 42°C/W, compared to the SOT-223 package with a thermal coefficient of 53°C/W. In addition, the MLPM package is 50% smaller than the SOT-223, making the IRU1502-33 beneficial in portable and battery operated applications.

Other applications include hard disk drive, CD-ROM, DVD drivers as well as noise sensitive circuitry in RF, audio and DSP, FPGA and microprocessors.

"The low equivalent series resistance (ESR) of ceramic capacitors ensures low-noise operation, improves load transient response and enables smaller circuit size, compared with circuits using other capacitor types," said Reza Amirani, Director of Applications for DC-DC Power Management ICs at International Rectifier.

The IRU1502-33 features ultra low noise, fast start-up and an excellent line and a load (transient) response specification of 1A/µs. An initial voltage reference with ±2% tolerance over load/line and temperature range (0-120°C) is included, with an ultra-low ground current of 650µA over the full load range. The new LDO also includes built-in output protection with both current limit and thermal shutdown.
