International Rectifier Introduces High Voltage Half Bridge Gate Driver ICs with Built-In Protection Circuits for Advanced Automotive Systems

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. June 2003 - International Rectifier, IRŪ (NYSE: IRF), today introduces the IR2301 and IR2302 high voltage gate driver ICs that are specifically targeted for automotive Motor Control applications, such as variable speed motor drives, common-rail injectors and valve control systems.

The main advantage of the IR2301 and IR2302 is the extended supply voltage range that allows safe operation from 600V all the way down to 5V. Extended voltage capability enhances control unit system reliability operating on standard battery voltages. In addition, the new driver ICs are ideal for emerging higher battery-voltage vehicle technologies, such as electric, hybrid and fuel cell systems.

The under-voltage lockout circuit switches off both outputs as soon as the supply voltage falls below 4.7V, and the outputs are released when the supply voltage exceeds 5V (integrated hysteresis of typically 0.3V). The ICs are 3.3V-, 5V- and 15V-input logic-compatible. The new automotive Motor Control devices share all the noise immunity features that have made IR's gate drivers the device of choice in the industrial motor drive market.

The IR2301 features maximum design flexibility since the high- and low-side outputs are independently controlled. The very low propagation delays for turn-on and turn-off, combined with accurate propagation delay matching of both channels simplify circuits and support high frequency switching up to 100kHz. The IR2301 offers a high-side as well as a low-side driver output controlled via two separate CMOS/LSTTL-compatible inputs. The outputs are in-phase with inputs.

The IR2302 features an integrated cross-conduction prevention logic that automatically prevents MOSFET or IGBT shoot-through (short circuit) situations in the H-bridge legs when changing motor direction. The half-bridge driver configuration of the IR2302 is controlled via a standard CMOS / LSTTL (down to 3.3V logic) compatible input. An additional control input is used to shut down the IC. Additional protection features are built-in, including high-side output in phase with control input, internal 540ns deadtime and shut down input to turn off both channels.

High Voltage Half Bridge Gate Driver ICs

"Both driver ICs offer high-speed MOSFET and IGBT gate driver capability and are designed to deliver safe operation, even in harsh automotive applications. For example, an H-bridge motor drive circuit in an EPS system will deliver full functionality during engine cranking at cold ambient temperatures," said Heiner Gschloessl, International Rectifier Marketing Manager for Automotive Components.

The high voltage IC technology used in the new gate driver ICs support low power dissipation and enable rugged, highly noise-immune designs. Integrated functionality simplifies circuit designs, minimizing design risk and reducing board space, improving time-to-market.
