International Rectifier Introduces an Integrated Power Block that Cuts Power Loss by 20 Percent in High-Current Computing and Telecommunications Systems

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. April 2003 - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF), today introduces the iP2002, an integrated power block that enables a four-phase, 120A synchronous buck converter switching at 1MHz per phase with up to 82.5% full load efficiency. The iP2002 is upward compatible to IR's iP2001, the industry's performance leader in integrated power solutions. The iP2002 improves power loss up to 20% compared to the iP2001, the benchmark at 1MHz switching for computing and telecommunications systems.

The new iP2002 is designed for single and multiphase converters with up to 12V distributed power rails, used for powering high-current CPUs and ASICs in computing and telecommunications systems. The iP2002 expands the iPOWIR™ line of functional building blocks that greatly simplify power system design.

IR's iPOWIR technology is a breakthrough in power density, efficiency and simplicity for power conversion. Significant improvements in the iP2002 performance have been achieved through both power loss reduction and package thermal improvements which now enables up to 30A continuous output current at 1MHz in a 11mm x 11mm x 2.6mm footprint.

International Rectifier iPOWIR devices integrate all layout-critical power semiconductor and passive components into a single BGA package to form complete functional building blocks. Because the iP2002 can switch efficiently at 1MHz, the board space and cost of ceramic output capacitors can be reduced by up to half when compared to converters that switchat 500kHz and use twice the inductance per phase. Complete scaleable multiphase converters can be easily constructed, adding only an external PWM controller plus input and output passive components.
