EL SEGUNDO, Calif. March 2003 - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF) today introduces four new 12V HEXFET® power MOSFETs optimized for low input voltage (typically 3.3V and 5V) point-of-load (POL) buck converters. The new MOSFETs deliver up to 15% higher current handling capability when compared to industry standard 30V devices. Typical applications include POL buck converters for telecom and datacom systems, desktop computers, servers and game consoles.

Carl Smith, Marketing Manager for Networking and Telecommunication Products at International Rectifier, said, "Industry standard 30 volt MOSFETs are optimized for higher input voltages, offering lower current capacities at a higher device on-resistance and cost. IR's new 12 volt MOSFETs have a reliable guard band for lower input voltage buck converter applications and offer better current handling capabilities while also meeting price targets."

The IRF7476, IRF7475, IRLR3802 and IRLU3802 N-channel MOSFETs and the IRF7910 dual N-channel MOSFET have been optimized for low device on-resistance and low gate charge to minimize both conduction and switching losses.

In low input voltage POL buck converters, the duty cycles of the synchronous and control MOSFETs are similar, usually higher than 30%. Therefore, the control and synchronous MOSFETs can have similar specifications to minimize conduction and switching losses at the same time. For load current applications up to 6A, separate control and synch MOSFETs can be replaced with a single IRF7910 dual MOSFET, saving board space. For applications up to 10A, use two IRF7476 or IRF7475 MOSFETs, and use the IRLR3802 for up to 12A circuits.
