International Rectifier Introduces Fixed Output, Low Dropout Regulator that is Stable with Low Cost Ceramic Capacitors

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. January 2003 - International Rectifier, IRŪ (NYSE: IRF), today introduces the IRU1011-33, a fixed output linear voltage regulator capable of providing a low drop-out voltage and can provide a continuous current up to 1.3A with a single 5V input. The device is stable with low-value, low-cost ceramic capacitors, enabling compact designs at lower cost and lower noise compared with circuits using tantalum capacitors. Applications for the new LDOs include power management for hard disk drives and ADSL and cable modems.

The IRU1011-33 is specifically designed to meet current transient response up to 1.3A per microsecond and provides an initial voltage reference with 2% accuracy. The new LDO includes built-in output current limiting and internal thermal shutdown.

Low Dropout Regulator

Reza Amirani, Director of Applications for DC-DC Power Management ICs at International Rectifier said, "The IRU1011-33 is stable with ceramic capacitors, reducing circuit size while improving system performance. The low equivalent series resistance (ESR) of ceramic capacitors ensures low-noise operation and improves load transient response. In addition, ceramic capacitors are smaller and cheaper than tantalum capacitors, making them suitable for space-constrained and cost-driven designs."
