IR's New Dual FETKYTM Integrates All Power Devices for a Synchronous Buck DC-DC Converter Into One SO-8.
The new Dual FETKYTM offers portable systems designers a best-in-class power density solution for Synchronous Buck DC-DC converters, providing efficiencies of up to 96 percent for 5A output current at 5.0, 3.3 and 1.8V.
EL SEGUNDO, CA. December 1999 - International Rectifier (IR®), the power conversion experts, now offer a 30V Dual FETKYTM that integrates all the power semiconductors for a Synchronous Buck DC-DC converter - including a high-side control FET and a low-side synchronous FET with a parallel Schottky diode for efficient deadtime conduction path - in a single SO-8 package. The new N-channel Dual FETKYTM - designated theIRF7901D1 - delivers best-in-class power density for portable power circuits, allowing designers to reduce the footprint of DC-DC converter solutions by more than 60% for laptops or other multi-converter battery powered systems. Converters based on the new Dual FETKYTM can provide outputs of up to 5A peak at 5.0, 3.3 and 1.8V with up to 96 percent efficiency.
"The new Dual FETKYTM, an extension of IR's successful FETKYTM product line, takes component integration to the next level," said Carl Smith, Product Marketing Engineer for the Processor Power Group at IR.
"Our new Dual FETKYTM was optimized for low voltage synchronous buck DC-DC applications, and includes a planar control FET and trench synchronous FET with a parallel metal barrier Schottky diode to deliver outstanding performance. Internal connections have been configured to minimize external PCB traces to reduce the stray inductances and to improve circuit layout design. This essentially "componentizes" a Buck DC-DC converter, providing lower component count and reduced footprint, while achieving very good efficiency".
Smith indicated that when using these Dual FETKYTM devices in the peripheral DC-DC applications for notebook PCs, a peak efficiency of over 94% (3.3Vout) and over 96% (5.0Vout) can be achieved. TheIRF7901D1 provides very good RDS(on), at 28.5mOhmstyp at Vgs = 4.5V and Qswitch = 2.3nCtyp for the control FET, and RDS(on), at 22mOhmstyp at Vgs = 4.5V for the synchronous FET with low Vf of 0.48V at 1A for the Schottky.
The newIRF7901D1 Dual FETKYTM optimized for DC-DC converters in next generation notebooks and other portables is available in industry standard SO-8 surface mount packages. Samples are available from stock, with production commencing in Q2 2000. A complete Design Kit is also available direct from IR (IRNBPS2) . It allows designers to compare discrete or Dual FETKYTM solutions on the same board for multiple output voltages.
