IR's New Synchronous FETKY Sets Efficiency Standard for DC-DC Converters with Reduced Footprint for Higher Power Density
Using an application-specific approach to power conversion system design, IR now offers highly efficient, space-saving solutions
for synchronous FET sockets in DC-DC conversion.
EL SEGUNDO, CA. August 1999 - International Rectifier (IR®), the power experts,
are expanding their FETKY; product offering with two new N-channel
Synchronous FETKYs. Designated the
IRF7807D1
and IRF7807D2,
these new low-voltage 30V FETKYs enable circuit designers to reduce the
required footprint of the synchronous MOSFET solution, increasing
power density while providing the same efficiency and performance
of an equivalent discrete solution.
The FETKY, which co-packages an advanced HEXFET® power MOSFET
together with an ultra low Vf Schottky diode, was pioneered by IR.
For the synchronous FET socket within DC-DC converters, a Schottky
is paralleled with a MOSFET to provide a more efficient path for
deadtime conduction compared with the body diode of the MOSFET
alone. When the Schottky is integrated into the same package as the
MOSFET, much lower stray inductances are achieved, keeping the
voltage developed across the Schottky during conduction to a minimum
to increase efficiency.
"The new Synchronous FETKYs are optimized for low power 3.3Vout and
5.0Vout DC-DC converters, like those within the notebook PC and
other portable systems equipment. By including the Schottky diode
in the same package as the MOSFET, the solution achieves the smallest
possible component footprint for DC-DC conversion up to 5Aout. These
FETKYs are also suited for other similar low-power synchronous buck
DC-DC converter applications.
"With ever-increasing demands being placed upon portable systems like
laptops, reducing form factors, saving space, and improving electrical
and thermal efficiency are becoming very important system design
considerations," said Carl Smith, product marketing engineer for the
Processor Power Group at IR. "Our new Synchronous FETKY was designed
for application specific low voltage DC-DC applications, and to expand
IR's focus on DC-DC conversion solutions. This solution provides a
lower component count, a reduced footprint on the circuit board and
achieves efficiency parity versus the next best discrete solution."
Smith said, "The new Synchronous FETKYs help designers achieve as
high an electrical and thermal efficiency as possible. The
IRF7807D1
is in an SO-8 package and provides very good RDS(on) of
17mOhms at Vgs = 4.5V for on-state conditions and low Vf = 0.5V at
1A for the Schottky during deadtime conditions. The
IRF7807D2,
also in an SO-8, offers the same on-state performance as the
IRF7807D1,
but integrates a 3A-rated Schottky with Vf = 0.57V @ 3A."
The new IR Synchronous FETKYs, optimized for DC-DC converters in the
next generation notebook PCs and other battery-operated portable
systems, are available in industry standard SO-8 surface mount
packages
. Samples are available from stock,
with production quantities commencing in August 1999.
