New IR "benchmark" series of HEXFET® power MOSFETs for offline SMPS has industry's lowest Rds(on) at 600V
With RDS(on) values of 50 percent less than existing technology, IR's new Benchmark Series devices enable products not otherwise
possible within volume and thermal constraints.
EL SEGUNDO, CA. July 1999 - International Rectifier (IR®) has announced a new family of 600V HEXFET® power MOSFETs with the lowest
RDS(on) values available in the industry. The new series of devices has RDS(on) values that are as low as one tenth those of
established, industry-standard types in the same package size. Compared with existing technology, the new IR family offers RDS(on)
values of about half of those from the nearest competitor in the same package size.
The new Benchmark HEXFET® devices are targeted at high-end, space-constrained applications where the highest power MOSFET
efficiency is required. Examples are multi-kilowatt SMPSs in high-end computing and telecom applications, as well as high power PFC
front-ends. In such applications, the efficiency of IR's new products enables the designer to:
IR's enhanced performance comes from their application-specific product development methodology. Based on this approach, IR
has achieved high performance in SMPS applications for each device footprint.
The chips used in the new 600V Benchmark HEXFET products are manufactured using IR's recently introduced high voltage vertical
P-column DMOS technology (equivalent to Infineon Technologies' "CoolMOS" technology in performance per area). The
breakthrough performance, however, comes from combining the new silicon technology with IR's high performance packaging. The
new IR "Super" series of packages allows up to 136 percent more silicon to be put in the same footprint resulting in a lower RDS(on)
value.
First members of the product family to be introduced are:

Samples for these devices will be available in June, with pre-prodution in September and production in October.
Note that the new IR products offer RDS(on) values of less than one tenth of the value of traditional types in industry-standard
packages (like the TO-220 and TO-247). The table above also shows that, compared with the best that any competitor can offer, IR
offers RDS(on) values of about half (42-63 percent lower) in the same package outline.
The new IR Benchmark parts are just the top end of a full range of products targeted for power supply applications, spanning the range
of product performance and cost. (See table below.) IR is the ONLY supplier that has three tiers of product performance to support
ALL of the device needs of most power supply manufacturers.

IR plans to broaden its Benchmark Series offerings at 600V, while devices with different voltage ratings are also being considered.
"These devices are not a cost-reduction
vehicle compared with existing commodity-type products," commented Carl Blake, technical marketing manager for SMPS switches
at IR. "These products are a valuable way for the customer to reduce total system cost by reducing the area and volume occupied
by the circuit board and the associated thermal management elements."
"We consider this to be an important development for the SMPS market," added Gabe Gotthard, VP of marketing for the Switch Group
at IR. "IR's Benchmark Series products enable customers to develop end-products that were not otherwise possible within volume
and thermal constraints. In high voltage FETs, IR is again the uncontested performance leader."
