EL SEGUNDO, CA. April 1999 - International Rectifier (IR^®) now offers a series of IGBT products in a TO-220 Full-Pak package. Ranging from 5A to 20A, these devices are ideal for power supplies and various motor drive applications such as industrial drives, washing machine drives, HVAC and other consumer motor drives up to 10HP.

Four types of IGBTs are available in the TO-220 Full-Pak, including:

• K-series IGBTs with a guaranteed short circuit capability for brushless DC drives operating at more than 12kHz or inverter drives at more than 8kHz.
• F-series IGBTs for HVAC applications operating below 8kHz.
• U-series IGBTs with maximum from 10 to 40kHz for UPS, power supply and motor drive applications not needing short circuit protection.
• WARP SpeedTM IGBTs -- ideally suited for power supply applications over 60kHz, particularly those with power factor correction capabilities.

"These products offer the designer more flexibility and are an excellent expansion to our existing industry leading discrete IGBT product range," says Matthew Carter, product manager for IGBTs at IR. "The TO-220 Full-Pak is an alternative to the industry standard TO-220 and D2-PAK for customers who need to improve the automated manufacturability of their system. For customers that do not want to go to a fully surface-mount solution, but need to improve the automated manufacturability of their system, this package is ideal. Since the package is fully encased in plastic, no extra insulating hardware is required in order to provide electrical isolation between the device and the heatsink and/or the mounting screw or clip. These factors make assembly far easier when compared to a TO-220. The device is isolated up to a massive 2.5kV and is UL rated with a creepage distance of 4.8mm between pins and heatsink.

"The combination of this package, and IR's industry leading silicon performance means 20 to 40 percent less power dissipation compared to similar competing IGBT devices, resulting in smaller heatsinks and reduced system cost," Carter noted.

A Co-Pack configuration with an IGBT and an anti-parallel HEXFRED^TM diode in a TO-220 Full-Pak is also available. The HEXFRED diode compliments the IGBT, significantly reducing EMI compared to other Fast Recovery Diodes. This allows truly inaudible operation with minimum losses above 16kHz.
