EL SEGUNDO, CA. December 1998 - International Rectifier (IRÒ), the power expert, now offers a new Mini Series of
Intelligent Power Switches (IPS)
designed with the most extensive array of protection features and featuring some of the smallest packages available.
The fail-safe and high-density features are important for factory automation applications such as in DC input/output modules to
increase the number of available channels for a given system. Automotive applications also benefit from the protection and high
packing density as the number of loads and electronic control units are increasing, but the available space is becoming more
constrained and the reliability requirements more stringent to reduce warranty return and expenses. Ideal applications are found in
smart fuse boxes, engine controls, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability controls and other space constrained yet safety critical
systems.
The primary features for the IPS Mini Series include:
SMALL SIZE -- The small SO8 package now houses a high-side and low-side
IPS capable of handling more than 2A of continuous load current. Dual and quad channel high-side and low-side IPS are also
available in SO8 and SO16 packages.
NO EXTRA EXTERNAL COMPONENTS FOR FULL PROTECTION -- The
integrated protection features include over-temperature, over-current, over-voltage and an active inductive energy clamp, eliminating
the need for extra external protection components. Even obscure conditions, such as loss of ground and loss of supply that could
cause parasitic damages, have been taken into account.
REDUCED EMI -- Internal slew rate control for turn-on and turn-off and low
noise charge pump for high-side devices means lower EMI. Ground noise generation of less than 10
mA is the industry lowest figure.
ISOLATION FROM GROUND LOOP -- The high-side IPS products are
designed to handle a large offset from logic ground to load or chassis ground due to harness or contact resistance and corrosion.
WORK WITH PWM CONTROL FOR LINEAR SOLENOID AND DC MOTOR
-- A novel level-shifted active clamp circuit in the high-side IPS allows these devices to act as active switches even during
re-circulation of inductive energy. This scheme permits full utilization of PWM control required for linear solenoid and DC motor.
All of the IPS devices integrate a low RDS(on) output Power MOSFET with protection and control circuits. Interface to the micro-
controller is very simple with full logic level compatibility. The 3-terminal low-side IPS is also pin compatible to the discrete counterpart,
but of course with added safety upgrades. The high-side IPS also offers diagnostic feedback. Various single, dual and quad channel
configurations are offered in SO8, SO16 and SOT223 surface mount packages.
