International Rectifier Announces Two New 'SUPER' Package Styles
EL SEGUNDO, CA. November 1998 - International Rectifier (IR() now offers two new package styles, the Super-220( and Super-D2Pak(, for
their industry leading power semiconductors, expanding IR's leadership position in power packaging in terms of density, reliability and
space savings. Both new package types feature the same footprint and lead spacing as industry standard packages, but
accommodate far larger semiconductor die and therefore can handle much higher currents. These packages also perform to the
toughest commercial reliability standards available.
"Designers are constantly looking for ways to improve the power density of their systems," says Chris Ambarian, director of technical
marketing for MOSFETs and IGBTs at International Rectifier. "These packages help them reach their targets with minimal engineering
effort, providing the required space savings while maintaining time to market. The increases in power density achieved also allow
designers to realize cost savings by reducing the number of paralleled devices required for a particular circuit, significantly reducing
costly board real estate."
"With the introduction of ever lower RDS(on) devices, packages are becoming a limiting factor in actual circuit performance. The
increased current handling capability of both these new package styles allows our customers to better utilize the silicon potential,
especially for higher current applications such as in low voltage battery motor drive and automotive applications. These packages
also have inherently low inductance features that are excellent for these and power supply applications," Ambarian adds.
A new Super-220 has the same footprint as the TO-220, but is capable of housing over double the amount of silicon (equivalent to the
industry standard TO-247). This device also features a current rating of 95A, 5A more than the standard TO-247 package and 20A
more than the standard TO-220 package. Additionally, this versatile package can be clip mounted, or when the device is solder
plated, surface mounted.
The Super-D2Pak has the same footprint as the industry standard D2Pak, but is capable of holding up to
40 percent more silicon, allowing for a considerable improvement in RDS(on) for a given package outline. This device
also has a 23 percent lower profile (>1mm) which makes it ideal for high density, space conscious systems. International Rectifier's
industry standard D2Pak is rated at 75A, while the Super-D2Pak is rated at 95A.
Both packages will match the automotive standard of Q101 and 175oC, which is regarded as the most stringent
commercial standard available today. Samples can be located through International Rectifier's normal sales channels.
