International Rectifier's Intelligent Power Switches (IPS) Offer Smart Solutions for High Density and High Current Fail-Safe Systems Applications
IR's new IPS are the most rugged, lowest EMI devices available for controlling industrial or automotive loads, with built-in
over-temperature, over-voltage and over-current protection for ultra-reliable operation.
EL SEGUNDO, CA. October 1998 - International Rectifier, the power experts, now offers a comprehensive family of Intelligent Power Switches
(IPS) for low-side and high-side power distribution in high-reliability systems with supply voltages from 4.5 to 50V.
These new devices on one end offer highest density packaging, while at the other end of the spectrum they offer the highest load
current handling capability at the lowest on-resistance (RDS(on)). With over-temperature, over-voltage and over-current protection for
ease of circuit design and design ruggedness, the new IPS products are ideal for use in high density applications such as automotive
junction boxes, active suspension, engine control systems and anti-lock brakes, and in high current applications like direct injectors,
glow plugs, head lamps and pump motors.
"Our new IPS are ideal replacements for electromechanical relays," said David Tam, director of control products at IR. "With all of
the integrated protection features, the IPS eliminate the need for extra components to reduce systems cost, and offer the ruggedness
to significantly reduce warranty returns and expenses."
Technical breakthroughs for the IPS family include a novel level-shifted active clamp design that allows these devices to act as
active switches even during re-circulation of inductive energy. All also employ low noise charge pumps with controlled turn-on/off
