International Rectifier's New POWIRTABTM Package Offers Higher Current Densities for Diodes

EL SEGUNDO, CA. May 1998 - International Rectifier (IR) has developed a completely new plastic package -- the PowIRtab -- to address the
emerging demand in the diode market for a low-cost, high-current carrying device to fill the gap between a standard TO-247 package
and more expensive metal case devices or power modules.

By utilizing multiple large diameter wire-bonds and a heavy power terminal, devices in this package range can handle currents up to
180 ARMS- Combining large creepage distance with the lowest possible internal contacting resistance and stray inductance ensures
optimal performance in both high and low voltage applications. The new PowiRtab packages are ideal for a wide range of
applications, such as welders (high current, high frequency), forklift trucks, generators (such as alternators in the high-current,
high-power ranges), Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) and
Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS).
This new PowIRtab package has been designed to fit within the well-known TO-247 and TO-218 footprints. An exposed tab provides
optimal electrical and thermal connection with high-current handling capability. The terminal also features PCB insertion fingers to
permit system designers to increase the power density of existing circuits without modification to the printed circuit board.
The new PowIRtab will be available as carrier for SAFEIRTM standard rectifier diodes,
QUIETIRTM fast recovery diodes, Schottky diodes and
HEXFREDSTM. Part numbers and specifications are shown in the table below:
