EL SEGUNDO, CA. May 1998 - International Rectifier (IR) announces the release of a new 40 V HEXFET targeted primarily at automotive applications. These devices use IR's Advanced Generation 5 technology enabling the production of an extremely efficient and rugged device. In order to increase efficiencies in many automotive applications, a Zener diode has been incorporated into the alternator to limit load dump to less than 40 V. The lower voltage requirement enables the use of the lower voltage MOSFETs which have significantly lower values of Rds(on).

The increase in efficiency enables the designer to use less power to perform the same job resulting in two potential benefits: increase in power efficiency (which ultimately increases fuel efficiency), or a reduction in device cost (by using less silicon to perform the same task).

A strong added benefit of the new IR offerings is that they complement IR's existing Q101-compliant automotive product range, which has made IR the leader in automotive power electronics. The following table shows the parts available:
