International Rectifier's New Pentium II Power Supply Design & 20V Power MOSFETs Reduce Cost by 30% Without Sacrificing Performance
"International Rectifier (IR) has created a power supply reference design for Intel Pentium II 233- and 266-Mhz microprocessors.
This new design meets all Intel- recommended specifications, while reducing component count by 20% and cost by 30% without
sacrificing quality or reliability," explains Gene Sheridan, director of the product development & marketing group for CPU power at
International Rectifier. "It represents another step in our commitment to deliver advanced processor power solutions based on power
discretes tailored to do the job at the lowest cost."
EL SEGUNDO, CA. September 1997 International Rectifier (IR), the leading supplier of power semiconductors and power solutions, now offers a
comprehensive IRVRM2 Pentium II Power Supply Design Kit providing a low-cost power solution for both 233- and 266-Mhz
microprocessors.
This new reference design eliminates the need to parallel MOSFETs, which helps to reduce the power supply component
count by 20% when compared with other processor power supply designs. Comprehensive Intel-specified performance and features
are achieved with less than 30 components and a bill-of-materials that reduces costs by 30% below other similar Pentium II power
system designs.
These improvements are achieved using an integrated compensation loop and internal pull-up resistors to simplify the control
circuit, as well as new 20V HEXFET® power MOSFETs designed specifically for this application. The new 20V MOSFETs meet
thermal requirements without paralleling, while achieving a 35% die-size reduction versus 30 and 50V alternatives, thanks to a new cell
design and gate oxide process. This new process provides greater overdrive capabilities over the gate voltage operating range of 4-7V,
allowing use of smaller die without sacrificing low RDS(on) and high efficiency characteristics. A variety of 20V MOSFET die sizes
packaged in both the TO-220 and D2Pak are available to address various load currents for the different Pentium II processors.
The IRVRM2 power supply reference design features D2Pak power devices providing low junction temperatures for improved
reliability without the use of bulky and expensive heatsinks. All 20V
device types and intended uses are listed in the table below.
