International Rectifier Now Offers IGBTs in D-Pak and D-CoPackTM Surface Mount Versions
EL SEGUNDO, CA. July 1997 - International Rectifier (IR), the power semiconductor expert, has expanded the discrete packaging options
available for their popular IGBTs, adding new surface mount D-Pak and D-CoPackTM versions. The later option, which combines an
IGBT and a HEXFREDTM in a single package, is an industry first.
"Now designers can take advantage of the 35 percent speed margin and 20 percent efficiency edge offered by our IGBTs in a
new range of applications requiring D-Pak surface mount capabilities," said Chris Ambarian, director of switch strategic marketing at
IR. "For example, these D-Pak IGBTs are ideal replacements for 400 and 600 V MOSFETs and Bipolars in AC compact (500W)
motor control applications. The new D-Pak and D-CoPack devices can cut total losses by up to 60 percent compared to MOSFETs
and they switch cleaner and more effortlessly than Bipolars. They also reduce board space and component count, lower assembly
cost and reduce or eliminate heatsinking in these applications."
Other applications for the new D-Pak discrete IGBT include single transistor or dual forward converters where the topology
does not require the body diode of the FET. The new D-CoPack serves bridge topologies in motor controls where a freewheeling
diode is required.
IGBTs in the new D-Pak and D-CoPack are available now in production quantities.
