Moat Process Yields Standard Recovery Diodes in Plastic SMT Packages for the First Time
International Rectifier's new 8EWS Series
surface mount standard recovery diodes allow designers to
save time, money, and space in their input rectification stages.
EL SEGUNDO, CA. May 1997 - International Rectifier (IR) has adopted a moat
structure process, used in producing very stable high-voltage input
diodes, to fabricate a new standard recovery rectifier with ratings of
800 to 1600 Volts. These new diode series are the first in the
industry available in plastic D-PAK and TO-252AA surface mount
packages for use in this popular input rectification range.
Designated the 8EWS Series, these new input diodes offer extremely
robust ratings for all line input voltages (110V - 380V). Current
ratings of up to 8 amps allow an application coverage range from
fractional horse power motor drives and power supplies up to 1
kilowatt. Thanks in part to the moat process, 8EWS Series devices
obtain
outstanding blocking voltage stability at high temperatures, and
thermal cycle tests show no forward voltage change or leakage current
drift.
"International Rectifier is the only company offering a SMD
solution in these ranges," says Ugo Robino, Director of Business
Development for Input Products at IR. "Our new 8EWS Series diodes are
more efficient and reliable. And by providing the best surface mount
form factor in each application, we present customers with exciting
solutions to their input rectification problems. With the
introduction of the 8EWS Series, we no longer just supply input
rectification components, we supply valuable solutions," he added.
In general, the new 8EWS Series plastic diodes can be used in any
application where input rectification of the main AC voltage is
required. One ideal application class includes industrial motor
control for devices like compressors and blowers, pumps, and air
conditioning units from 200 W to 1.5 kW. And in power supplies and
UPS systems up to 3 kilowatts for devices enterprise computer systems,
Telco applications and servers, and building electrical backup.
Samples of 8EWS Series devices are available now, with production
runs starting in June 1997.
