International Rectifier Offers New Module Family - the SUPER MAGN-A-Pak (SMAP)
EL SEGUNDO, CA. January 1997 - International Rectifier (IR), the power
semiconductor experts, introduces SUPER MAGN-A-PAK (SMAP), four
new series of power modules rated from 400 to 600 Amps. The new
SMAPs each contain a pair of power semiconductors for
implementing a complete half-bridge, and are available in
thyristor/thyristor, thyristor/diode, dual diode, and dual fast
recovery diode versions. These new modules complete the high
side of the power ranges of the existing ADD-A-PAK (AAP),
INT-A-PAK (IAP), and MAGN-A-PAK (MAP). The devices are part of
IR's strategy to offer customers complete power conversion
solutions, not just discrete components.
"With reductions in time-to-market, design costs, and assembly
labor, SMAP saves time and money in higher power systems," says
Ugo Robino of International Rectifier. "The lower assembly and
design cost becomes an important factor when the number of
pieces manufactured is relatively small, particularly in very
large systems where it becomes a large and substantial fraction
of the overall cost."
The SMAP utilizes the IR standard junctions which have been
assembled during the past years into the B-puks with excellent
reliability and performance. The die is held in position using
the compression bonded technique for use in heavy duty
industrial equipment. The insulation between the copper base
and the circuit is obtained with an aluminum nitride substrate
in compliance with all material prescriptions. All materials
are chosen in compliance with the most restrictive requirements
of fire resistance and smoke emission.
IR has been very conscientious with the detail of the whole
package design, allowing easier assembly and simpler solutions
for the system designer. For example, cavities around the
mounting holes are shaped to allow the use of any wrench,
including ratchet spinners and elbow wrenches for easy assembly.
IR has produced various circuit configurations and ratings
allowing easy solutions for a large variety of application
problems. The most common being: input rectifying bridges for
large motor drives and UPS, static switches for large UPS, input
half controlled bridges, switching bridges for DC motor drives,
and snubbers for large GTOs.
The price/performance ratio of IR's SMAPs is superior to
other technologies available on the market. See the table below

portion of the part number is the voltage code, where code x 100
= VRRM. All of the SMAP devices are available now.
