International Rectifier Develops New Generation of Thyristors in Plastic Packages
EL SEGUNDO, CA, November 1996 - International Rectifier
(IR), the power semiconductor experts, now offers three new
series of thyristors in plastic packages rated at 16, 25, and 55
Amps RMS. These new Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs)
complement packages and power ranges of the existing input
rectifier and output diode lines.
These new devices are rated with breakdown voltages of 800 and
1,200, an industry first. Also for the first time, these devices
are available in D2Pak surface mount packages, as well as the
standard TO-220AC and TO-247AC plastic versions. In fact, the
D2Pak, series 25TTS..S, is the only package on the market to
offer surface mountability at this power level.
"Our new input thyristors allow us to offer customers complete
power conversion solutions in economical plastic packages for
the first time," says Ugo Robino of International Rectifier.
"This new package synergy allows customers to save time and
money on the system assembly cost through the use of automatic
insertion equipment."
Another major advantage of this new series of thyristors, is
the high level of reliability achieved. IR's new thyristors are
stable after 1,000 hours of HTRB, 1,000 hours of 85/85, 1,000
temperature cycles, and 10,000 power cycles. This added
reliability and performance translates into long-term savings to
the customer.
These new plastic thyristors can be used in any application
where phase control of the main voltage is required. With the
proper set of plastic diodes (EWS series, ETS series, or EPS
series), two or three SCRs can be connected to form a
semi-controlled two- or three-phase bridge. The primary target
market for these new plastic SCRs is the 1.5 to 10 horsepower
motor control industry for products such as air conditioning
units, and industrial motor control applications such as
compressors, blowers, and pumps. The devices will also work well
for telecom and industrial power electronics.
The price/performance ratio of these new packages is superior
to other technologies available on the market. See the table
below for standard package pricing. Surface mount devices are
also available for a three-cent premium. All of these devices
are now available off-the-shelf.
