International Rectifier offers Generation 5 HEXFETs in Popular D-Pak Outline
EL SEGUNDO, CA, November 1996 - International Rectifier
(IR) has added four new device types to their popular and
fast-growing Generation 5 HEXFET® Power MOSFET line-up in the
surface-mount D-Pak package outline. "The range spans 30 to
100V for n-channel device types offering a significant drop in
the critical on-resistance parameter of up to 65 percent
compared to previous generations," says RJ Friedlander,
Strategic Marketing Manager for Switch Products at International
Rectifier. "In addition, as with all Gen 5 HEXFETs, these
devices take advantage of the proprietary and unique 4-mask
process that IR has pioneered. This enables the performance
improvements to be offered cost-effectively and with significant
volume capability and short manufacturing cycle times."
The IRFR3910 (100V, 0.12ohm, 15A), IRFR1205 (55V, 0.027ohm,
37A), and IRLR2905 (55V, 0.027ohm, logic-level, 36A) are all
devices aimed at the automotive market, as well as dc/dc
converters with 24-48V inputs in the 25 to 100W range. Targeted
automotive applications include electronic fuel injection,
anti-lock brake systems, and many other solenoid, lamp, and
motor drive uses. Especially important in automotive
applications, these new devices offer excellent avalanche
ratings, Eas and Ear, and in some cases two times that of
previous generation devices. The IRLR2905, for example, offers
an Eas rating of 210 mJ as compared to the IRLR024
previous-generation device with an Eas rating of 91 mJ.
The IRLR3103 (30V, 0.019ohm, logic-level, 46A) is targeted
for synchronous rectification in 5-12V input dc/dc converters.
The IRLR3103, as with other Gen 5 devices, offers improvements
in the performance of the integral diode. Vsd ratings have
dropped by 15% to a 1.3V maximum while reducing trr and Qrr by
35 to 65%. These reverse recovery characteristics of the
integral diode can have a significant impact on the efficiency
of synchronous rectification circuits.
All four part numbers are available in mass production at
this time.

Tape and reel versions can be ordered by adding a TR suffix to
the part numbers. Through-hole, I-Pak versions are also
available by using an IRFU prefix, rather than IRFR.
