New Surface Mount Packages for Schottky Diodes from International Rectifier Offer Enhanced Thermal Efficiency and Higher Current Carrying Capabilities
EL SEGUNDO, CA, November 1996 - International Rectifier, the
leading global supplier of semiconductors for power conversion
applications, has developed a new surface mount package for
Schottky diodes, the component of choice for most power output
stages in power supplies, motor drives and lighting ballasts
applications, to name a few.
This new surface mount package, designated the D61, has a 30
percent larger footprint than that of a standard D2PAK, but
provides a thermal efficiency of 0.72 oC/W -- more than 2.4
times that of the D2PAK package. This means that a standard
Schottky diode in the new D61 package can accommodate 2.7 times
higher current than the same die in a D2PAK.
"Our new D61 package for Schottky diodes will really end up
saving space for designers in many applications," said Bret
Daniels, product marketing manager for Schottky diodes at
International Rectifier. "Using the enhanced power handling
capabilities of the new D61 package, engineers can easily
replace two Schottky's in TO-227 packages or four devices
in TO-220 D2 PAKs in their current designs with a single
Schottky in a D61 package, and still provide the same current
carrying capability."
The new D61 package measures 19.93 mm wide by 10.00 mm deep by
6.10 mm high. Designers can specify the D61 package for the
entire range of IR Schottky diodes, with current ratings from 60
to 80 amps.
