New International Rectifier Photovoltaic Relay Ideally Suited For Type II PCMCIA Fax/Modem Cards
EL SEGUNDO, CA.--- The newest Microelectronic Photovoltaic Relay (MER) introduced by International Rectifier Corporation
offers industry pacing performance for an important requirement in the portable computing field.
The PVO402P is an extremely low-profile relay with a package only 2mm in height designed primarily for type II PCMCIA cards
which are only 5mm thick. These cards are used in the FAX /Modem function of portable computers. PCMCIA stands for the Personal
Computer Memory Card International Association, which sets industry-wide standards for this equipment.
International Rectifier's new PVO402P is a dual-pole, normally open solid-state device that integrates the relay and ring detector
(AC input opto-coupler) functions into one package, replacing two discrete components. In its PCMCIA operation, the PVO402P's
ring detector senses the ringing voltage on the telephone line when a FAX or modem is called. The ring detector output provides a
signal actuating the relay, which closes the line to enable reception of the incoming transmission.
This new relay offers an Input-to-Output isolation rating of 3,750 Vrms, which permits manufacturers building FAX/Modem cards
for both North America and European markets to stock only one common component. With competitive relays, different parts are
needed for each market requirement. Even though the PVO402P is intended for the Type II cards, its very low profile allows use in
other than PCMCIA formats also.
Another addition to the second generation of the Company's expanding solid state photovoltaic relay family, the PVO402P utilizes a
unique new integrated circuit photovoltaic generator and International Rectifier's HEXFET(R) power MOSFET transistors as the
output switch. The switch is controlled by radiation from a light-emitting diode that is optically isolated from the generator.
PVO402P Relays are packaged in an 8-pin molded thinpack DIP package with "gull-wing" surface mount terminals. It is available
in plastic shipping tubes (50 count) or on tape-and-reel. Production orders are available with eight to ten week lead-times.
