International Rectifier Introduces a 300V MOSFET Replacement for Electro-Mechanical Relays that Increases Reliability, Saves Space and Cuts Cost in Networking and Telecom Applications
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF), introduces the IRF3000, a 300V, N-channel HEXFET® power MOSFET developed to replace electro-mechanical relays in many telecom and networking applications. Because the new device is a solid-state semiconductor and has no mechanical parts, it increases overall system reliability, and is up to 30% smaller than an electro-mechanical relay.
The IRF3000 is more efficient than an electro-mechanical relay, with more than 90% reduction in on-state resistance compared to mechanical relays, minimizing conduction losses. Ultra-low gate charge minimizes switching loss. The IRF3000 is easier to drive than a relay, simplifying circuits and reducing overall system cost. The new device offers up to 30% cost savings compared to mechanical relays. Since typical networking and telecom systems use thousands of relays, minimizing switching loss, conduction loss and cost of individual devices is critical.
"Telecom and networking systems require very high reliability. Electromechanical relays have a life expectancy of 100 thousand to 10 million operations. Under similar load conditions, the IRF3000 can expect a life expectancy approaching a billion switching cycles, which significantly improves overall system reliability," said Carl Smith, Marketing Manager for Networking and Telecommunication Products at International Rectifier.
The IRF3000 is designed for switching applications requiring a low current switch (1.6A) with up to 200V input that do not require isolation, or when the load voltage does not reverse in polarity. The IRF3000 is also suitable for use in high frequency DC-DC converters.
The new device is, rated at 300V breakdown voltage providing the required safety margin for up to 200V input switching applications.
