International Rectifier Introduces a Complete Power Management Chip Set Kit to Power Intel® and AMD's Latest Microprocessors

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - International Rectifier, IR®; (NYSE: IRF) is first to introduce a complete power management chip set to simplify the design of low-voltage, high-current multiphase synchronous DC-DC converters complying with Intel® VRM 9.0 design guidelines while cutting logistics costs in manufacturing.

The IRUK3055CQ01 chip set consists of one IRU3055CQ highly integrated five-bit programmable, three-phase PWM controller IC with on board drivers, three IRF3704S control HEXFET® power MOSFETs and three IRF3711S synchronous HEXFET MOSFETs. These devices are individually optimized to work together to maximize system-level efficiency in a complete three-phase DC-DC synchronous buck converter solution, delivering up to 60A to power advanced microprocessors such as the Intel Pentium® 4 as well as the AMD K7.

Chip Set

"In today's high volume production environment each new item in the bill of material adds significant logistical effort and cost. Using the IRUK3055CQ01 chip set not only simplifies the design effort through optimized components, but also cuts costs associated with procurement and inventory management," said John Burgess, Vice President, Computing Business Development.

The IRU3055CQ PWM controller IC offers a programmable output voltage from 1.075V to 1.85V in 25mV steps, with up to 1% output voltage accuracy over the entire operating temperature range. The controller IC also offers many protection and monitoring features such as under-voltage lockout (UVLO), over-voltage protection, externally programmable soft-start, as well as a Power Good function that detects outputs beyond ±10% of the programmed voltage.

IR's 20V HEXFET power MOSFETs minimize conduction, switching, driver and output losses compared to 30V MOSFETs while providing sufficient safety margin in a 12V input synchronous buck converter. The 20V IRF3711 MOSFET is specifically designed for best performance as a synchronous MOSFET, while the 20V IRF3704 MOSFET is designed for best performance as a control MOSFET.

The IRDC3055 reference design kit utilizing the IRUK3055CQ01 chip set is also available and can deliver up to 60A and 1.5V output voltage from a 12V input bus.

Pricing and Ordering Information

Pricing for the IRUK3055CQ01 chip set is US $4.20 each in 10,000-unit quantities. The IRDC3055 reference design kit is US $250 each, and can be purchased online from the International Rectifier Web site, www.irf.com.

Samples are available now with full production volumes available in November 2002.
