EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - International Rectifier, IR®, (NYSE: IRF) introduces the new IRIS4009 Integrated Switcher, a device that combines a control IC and a low-loss, rugged HEXFET® power MOSFET in a single five-pin package for AC-DC power supplies up to 30W.

Application-specific silicon and package technologies enable the IRIS4009 to handle over 60% more power than leading competing devices classified at the same power level. This makes the IRIS4009 a cost-effective alternative to competitive devices rated at higher power levels. In addition, the IRIS4009 is a more rugged device with an avalanche energy rating of 100mJ.

The new device is ideal for space-constrained flyback converters up to 30W, commonly found in universal and single input AC-DC power supplies for consumer electronics and adapters. The IRIS4009 can also be used as a housekeeping supply in larger AC-DC power supplies or motor drives, up to 30W open frame, or 15W in closed frame configuration. Like the other IRIS family devices, IRIS4009 is available in the TO-220 and the reduced height TO-262 package for space-restricted applications.

Compared to a discrete solution, the IRIS4009 cuts part count and board space by 25%, thus simplifying design. Power supplies made with the IRIS4009 have a stand-by power of less than 1W, meeting the Blue-Angel energy-saving standard.

The IRIS Series Integrated Switchers optimize performance by changing between a pulse ratio control (PRC) mode at low load conditions and a quasi-resonant (QR) mode at high load. Other features offered by the IRIS4009 include primary current mode, secondary voltage mode, VCC over-voltage protection (latched), over-current and over-temperature protection.
