International Rectifier Introduces Two, Dual Synchronous PWM Controller ICs that Offer Design Flexibility

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - International Rectifier. IR® (NYSE: IRF) today introduces the IRU3046 and IRU3048 dual synchronous PWM controller ICs with an integrated LDO controller. The IRU3046 has current sharing capability and offers a versatile, high performance solution for buck converters up to 20A. The simpler, smaller IRU3048 is a cost-effective compact solution for multiple output power supplies.

Both devices are suitable for power management circuits for graphics cards, DDR memory, hard disk drives, or any multiple output on-board DC-DC converter. In DDR memory circuits they can be used to provide both the supply voltage (VDDQ) and the termination terminal voltage (VTT).

Controller IC

The IRU3046 can be configured to work in three modes: two independent output supplies; single-output, two-phase operation from a single supply; and single-output with programmable current sharing from two supplies. Current sharing is especially useful when power needs exceed the input power budget of a single voltage rail. A converter designed with the IRU3046 can be configured to share the input power from two voltage rails to provide the output power required by the load. In the current sharing mode, the IRU3046 can take the input power from the 5V and 12V rails and provide 1.5V at 16A, or 24W, with the IRF7460 as the control FET and the IRF7457 as the synchronous FET

Reza Amirani, Director of Applications for DC-DC power management ICs at IR said, "New graphics cards and other peripheral devices require more power which can exceed the power budget of a single voltage rail. The current sharing capability of the IRU3046 makes the power management circuit easier to implement. Power system designers can select recommended matching HEXFET® power MOSFETs and procure all the power management semiconductors from a single source for speed of design."

The IRU3046 offers programmable operating frequency up to 400kHz. It features an un-committed error amplifier for voltage tracking applications, input supply monitoring to eliminate voltage sequencing problems, programmable output voltages, soft start control, short circuit protection, and power good signal for all outputs. The under voltage lock-out feature monitors all input supplies before soft start. The LDO controller in the IRU3046 has an independent bias supply. The IRU3046 can also be synchronized with an external clock. The IRU3046 comes in a 24-pin TSSOP package (IRU3046CF).

The IRU3048 operates at a fixed frequency of 200kHz and is configured for two independent synchronous outputs in addition to the linear output provided by the LDO. The IRU3048 comes in the16-pin plastic SOIC (IRU3048CS) or TSSOP-16 (IRU3048CF) package, and provides a cost effective, compact solution for triple output requirements.

Availability and Pricing

The IRU3046 and IRU3048 are now available for sampling. Pricing in 10,000-unit quantities starts at US $1.06 each for the IRU3048CS.
