International Rectifier Introduces Active Clamp Reset MOSFETs with up to 15% Lower On-Resistance to Boost Compact Telecom DC-DC Converter Performance
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF) today introduces the IRF6216 and IRF6217 P-channel HEXFET® power MOSFETs designed specifically for active clamp reset circuits in isolated DC-DC converters. The new 150V devices in the SO-8 package have 15% lower device on-resistance, or RDS(on), compared to previous generation P-channel devices in the larger D-Pak footprint. Hence, the new devices deliver increased efficiency in a smaller package and contribute to reduced power system size and cost in telecommunications and data communications equipment.
The new MOSFETs optimize active clamp reset circuits in 48V input, isolated DC-DC converters using forward converter, flyback or similar topologies. The use of a P-channel MOSFET instead of an N-channel MOSFET simplifies drive circuitry since it eliminates the need for a high side gate drive. In addition, the new devices have a lower breakdown voltage to further improve performance.
Carl Smith, Marketing Manager for Networking and Communication Products at International Rectifier, said, "As power density requirements increase, manufacturers of networking and communication equipment are replacing larger quarter brick sized DC-DC converters with smaller eighth brick DC-DC converters, saving about 40% space. IR's new MOSFETs can help increase power density and efficiency while meeting system cost budgets."
The IRF6216 and IRF6217 enable compact implementation of an active circuit to reset transformer core flux, which builds up during primary switch-on time. The IRF6216 features an ultra-low RDS(on) of 24mOhms for lower conduction losses in circuits using an air-gap transformer with larger magnetizing current. The IRF6217 has ultra-low gate charge, or QG, for high frequency switching in circuits with smaller magnetizing current.
