International Rectifier Introduces a 2A Very Low Drop-Out Regulator that is Stable with Ceramic Capacitors and Cuts System Cost by 20%

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF) today introduced the IRU1120, an adjustable very low drop-out (LDO) linear voltage regulator for up to 2A output current. The new regulator is stable with low cost, space saving, ceramic capacitors enabling up to 20% lower system cost and up to 50% smaller system footprint for ADSL and cable modems, graphic cards, desktop computers, hard disk drives and general-purpose on-board DC-DC converters.

The IRU1120 is stable with output capacitance values as low as 4.7mF, reducing the number of output capacitors and system cost. System cost can be further reduced with less expensive, safe and widely available ceramic capacitors in place of tantalum capacitors while simultaneously reducing system size and height. The low equivalent series resistance (ESR) of ceramic capacitors ensures low-noise power supply operation and improves load transient response, necessary in microprocessor and ASIC power supplies, which must ramp-up quickly from standby to full operating mode.

When used in applications where dual supplies are available such as graphics cards, the IRU1120 provides 1.1V drop-out at 2A load, providing better performance and lower cost than PNP-type regulators. This is accomplished by providing a higher voltage to the control pin (VCTRL) than the input supply voltage (VIN). The IRU1120 can also be used in single supply applications as a standard LDO regulator with 1.3V drop-out by connecting the VIN and VCTRL pins together.

Reza Amirani, Director of Applications for DC-DC Power Management ICs at International Rectifier said, "The IRU1120 enables designers to combine a cost-effective linear voltage regulator with compact and cost-effective ceramic capacitors. Previously, designers were limited to using expensive and bulky tantalum capacitors. Combining the IRU1120 with ceramic capacitors also provides better performance in a smaller form factor."

The new device is housed in the new, lower cost and lower profile 5-pin UltraThin-Paktm surface mount package. The adjustable output voltage can be set from 1.25V to 5.5V. The IRU1120 provides internal current limit and thermal shutdown circuits to protect the device if a short circuit occurs.
