International Rectifier Introduces Ultrafast Diodes That Improve Welding and Battery Charging Circuits

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 14, 2002--International Rectifier, IR(r) (NYSE:IRF - news) introduces two new devices that expand the existing ultrafast recovery diode family. The UFB120FA20 and the UFB120FA40 one hundred and twenty ampere (120A), ultrafast diodes are used to maximize efficiency in output rectification circuits in high current applications, such as welding systems, power supplies and battery chargers.

The 120A diodes have up to 11% faster recovery time than competing 200V devices and approximately 17% faster recovery time than competing 400V devices. Soft recovery and frequency characteristics enable higher welding frequencies that make bulky magnetic components such as transformers and coils smaller, less expensive, more efficient and more reliable.

UltraFast Diodes

Dr. Francesco Vallone, International Rectifier Product Marketing Manager, said, ``The four-terminal SOT-227 package enables flexible component layout. In addition, the rectifiers within the package are independent and electrically isolated from the copper substrate, which means that manufacturers may install the devices in series or parallel for greater voltage or current capability.''

Newly-designed, high-performance silicon die allow a thicker substrate to be used for improved mechanical strength and electrical insulation. Insulation voltage rating is 2500V RMS between live terminals and the copper base.

The SOT-227 is one of the primary industrial mid-power range packages and is used predominantly throughout the switch-mode power supply and welding markets. The new devices meet or exceed performance specifications of competing devices and are designed for simplified insertion into existing or new designs.

Pricing and Availability

The new ultrafast soft recovery diodes are available immediately. Pricing is US $11.72 each for the UFB120FA20 (200V) and US $11.79 each for the UFB120FA40 (400V) devices in 1,000-unit quantities.
