EL SEGUNDO, CA, January 2002 - International Rectifier (IR®) today introduces the 30V IRL3713 series of HEXFET® power MOSFETs available in D2Pak, TO-262 and TO-220 packages. The IRL3713S in a D2Pak, with a maximum RDS(on) of 3mOhm, has half the on-resistance of the previous generation device in the same footprint and can offer up to 1.5% higher efficiency in an isolated DC-DC converter.

The IRL3713 series devices are optimized for secondary-side synchronous rectification in 48V input isolated DC-DC converters. They also improve performance in active OR'ing circuits in 12V output DC-DC converters. Additionally, they can be used as synchronous FETs in synchronous buck converters. Typical applications include powering application specific ICs (ASICs) and microprocessors in networking and communication equipment, desktops and servers.

The new devices have low RDS(on) for low conduction loss as well as low gate charge to minimize switching loss. Low gate charge also simplifies drive circuitry. These improvements in silicon performance are available in the same package footprint enabling an increase in converter power density. When tested in the secondary side of a 48V input, 3.3V output isolated DC-DC converter operating at 200kHz, the IRL3713 offers up to 1.5% efficiency improvement over the previous generation IR device at 60A full load.

In active OR'ing power supply redundancy circuits, MOSFETs replace Schottky diodes to achieve higher efficiency. The IRL3713 series devices are for ideal active OR'ing applications, since the low RDS(on) ensures minimal forward voltage drop in the on-state, for maximum efficiency.

When a Schottky diode is used in the OR'ing circuit, the typical 40A device has a forward voltage drop of about 0.4V to 0.5V at 100°C, while the IRL3713 has a forward voltage drop of 0.18V at 100°C and 40A. This is an improvement of over 50%, which contributes to increased efficiency.
