EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - The quest for higher currents at lower voltages poses a continuous challenge in DC-to-DC power systems design. Portable applications push the requirements for yet more compact, more efficient, more integrated solutions even further.

International Rectifier, IR(®) (NYSE: IRF) Chief Executive Officer Alex Lidow, presented "Power Management for Portable Applications in the New Millennium" at the Portable Design Exhibition 2002. Lidow discussed the power management challenges and presented solutions that deliver improved energy efficiency at low voltages, reduced package size, and circuit topologies that minimize the distance from the power supply to the load for faster transient response.

"Portable applications such as cell phones and palm-sized computers are becoming increasingly 'feature-rich,' which drives the need for greater performance. The portable electronics market is a technology driver, with its demand for performance, small size, and extended battery life. Power management technologies hold the keys to success for the growth of the portable market with higher performance silicon and smaller, higher performance packaging," Lidow said.
