INTERNATIONAL RECTIFIER - THE POWER MANAGEMENT LEADER

International Rectifier Chipsets Enable Higher Efficiency in DC-DC Converters for Intel's Low Power Processor for "Ultra-Dense" Servers

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF) today announced three DC-to-DC power management chipsets optimized to power the Intel® Ultra Low Voltage Pentium® processors for emerging low-power, space-saving, ultra-dense, or blade servers. The chipsets provide up to 2% higher efficiency at the 1.1 volts required by Intel's new processors compared to the nearest competitive solution.

The power management chipsets consist of three components: The IRU3013 power management integrated circuit (IC) and two optimized 30V or 20V HEXFET® power MOSFETs.

"The three new chipsets complement Intel's drive to reduce power usage of ultra-dense servers. By increasing DC-DC converter efficiency, systems can be smaller, cooler, and more reliable," commented Carl Blake, DC-DC Marketing Manager for Computing at International Rectifier.

The new category of ultra-dense or blade servers is growing rapidly to serve the needs of Internet service providers (ISPs) and enterprise data centers to cut power usage, air conditioning and real estate costs. Ultra dense servers are stacked up like plates in a cabinet and require low heat dissipation. They are increasingly popular for low-end server tasks such as delivering Web pages and housing protective firewalls.

Technical Highlights

The IRU3013 is specifically designed for Intel Pentium microprocessor applications as described in the VRM 8.5 specification. The IC provides a single-chip solution for four functions: the Vcore, 1.2V for assisted gunning transistor logic (AGTL+), 1.8V regulation and an uncommitted low dropout (LDO) controller that can be used either as a 1.2V Power Good detector or to provide a 1.5V accelerated graphics port (AGP) bus.

The first chipset combines the IRU3013 with the IRF7811W control FET and the IRF7822 synchronous FET for the 13A to 15A current range. This chipset provides peak efficiencies of up to 91% at 1.1VOUT and 300kHz, or up to 2% higher efficiency than competitive solutions.

The second chipset consists of the IRU3013, the IRLR3715 control FET and the IRFR3704 synchronous FET. The second chipset is a wise choice for designing cost-effective 12V-input buck converters in the 13A to 15A range.

The third chipset enables a high-efficiency, cost-effective system for the 8A to 10A range. The IRU3013 is combined with the IRF7456 synchronous FET and the IRF7459 control FET.

Pricing and Availability

Samples and production quantities are available immediately. Pricing starts at US$2.44 each for the IRU3013 and US $0.90 each for the IRF7456 in 10,000-unit quantities.
