International Rectifier's DC-DC Power Management Chipsets Deliver 2% Higher Efficiency for Intel's New Low Power Processor For "Ultra-Dense" Servers

EL SEGUNDO, CA, December 2001 - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF) today announced three DC-DC power management chipsets optimized to power Intel's new Ultra Low Voltage Pentium® III processor for the emerging category of low-power, space-saving ultra dense servers. The chipsets provide up to 2% higher efficiency at the industry-low 1.1 volts required by Intel's new processors compared to the nearest competitive solution.

The three power management chipsets are based on the cost-effective IRU3013 power management IC. The IRU3013 IC integrates a 5-bit programmable synchronous buck converter controller with triple LDO controllers and is compatible with Intel VRM 8.5 specification recommended for the new ultra low voltage processor. The IRU3013 IC combines with IR's optimized 30V or 20V HEXFET® power MOSFETs to provide the best performance while matching the customer's budget envelope.

The new category of ultra dense or blade servers is growing rapidly to serve the needs of Internet service providers (ISP) and enterprise data centers to cut power usage, air conditioning and real estate costs. Ultra dense servers are stacked up like plates in a cabinet and require low heat dissipation. They are increasingly popular for low-end server tasks such as delivering Web pages or housing protective firewalls.

The improvement in efficiency provided by these optimized chipsets reduces the heat dissipated to ambient and allows stacking multiple servers. High-efficiency DC-DC converters run at lower temperature and improve system reliability. Lower heat dissipation makes it possible to layout components closer together and increases power density for ultra-dense servers.

Technical Highlights

The IRU3013 controller IC is specifically designed for Intel Pentium microprocessor applications as described in the VRM 8.5 specification. The IC provides a single chip solution for the Vcore, 1.2 volt AGTL+, and 1.8V with a third uncommitted LDO controller that can be used either as a 1.2V Power Good detector or to provide a 1.5V AGP bus in applications where this voltage is required.

The first chipset combines the IRU3013 controller IC with compact SO-8, 30V, IRF7811W MOSFET as the control FET and SO-8, 30V IRF7822 MOSFET as the synchronous FET for the 13A to 15A current range. This chipset provides peak efficiencies of up to 91% at 1.1VOUT and 300kHz, or 2% higher efficiency than nearest competitive solutions.

The alternative for the 13A to 15A current range is to combine the IRU3013 IC with the D-Pak, 20V, IRLR3715 MOSFET as the control FET and the D-Pak, 20V, IRFR3704 MOSFET as the synchronous FET. The 20V, IRFR3704 and IRLR3715 HEXFET MOSFETs are manufactured using IR's rugged stripe planar technology, and are designed to replace more expensive 30V devices in 12V input buck converters for applications where cost is more important than performance.

Finally, IR offers a high efficiency, cost effective chipset for the 8 to 10A, low current range that consists of the IRU3013 IC combined with the SO-8, 20V, IRF7456 synchronous MOSFET and the SO-8, 20V, IRF7459 control MOSFET.
