New FETKY® Devices from International Rectifier Save 60 Percent Space in Peripheral Applications
EL SEGUNDO, CA. September 2001 - International Rectifier (NYSE: IRF) introduces two new P-channel FETKY® devices in an SO-8 package. The IRF5803D2 and IRF7342D2 are additions to IR's line of FETKY devices of co-packaged HEXFET® power MOSFETs and Schottky diodes.
Co-packaging the MOSFET and Schottky diode in a single SO-8 reduces packaging cost and offers substantial space savings. The two new devices, IRF5803D2 and IRF7342D2, offer up to 60% space savings when compared to a discrete solution and are ideal for low cost buck converter designs used in peripheral applications.
In a FETKY device, the MOSFET and the diode are placed on the same heat spreader. Packaging the MOSFET and Schottky diode in a single package minimizes the stray inductance and resistance due to PCB traces and packaging. Lower stray inductance reduces voltage spikes and increases reliability, while lower resistance results in higher efficiency.
Smaller voltage spikes in the circuit contributes to lower system cost, since device breakdown voltage can be lower. For example, a buck converter with a 24V bus can be designed with the 40V P-channel IRF5803D2 instead of a 45V P-channel MOSFET.
Carl Blake, Technical Marketing Manager for DC-DC Products said, "P-channel FETKY devices do not require a charge pump or a bootstrap capacitor for high-side drive voltage in buck converters, so replacing N-channel control MOSFETs with FETKY devices simplify drive circuits, reducing system cost. The space savings contribute towards smaller, sleeker designs, both major driving factors in products such as desktop printers."

The new IRF5803D2 and IRF7342D2 FETKY devices are in full production now. Pricing is US $0.37 each for the IRF5803D2 and US $0.46 each for the IRF7342D2 in 10,000-unit quantities. Datasheets are available on the International Rectifier Web site, www.irf.com.
