International Rectifier Introduces New 600V Co-Pack IGBTs for the High Volume Appliance Motor Drive Market

EL SEGUNDO, CA. July 2001 - International Rectifier, IR®, NYSE: IRF, today announced the expansion of its line of Co-Pack IGBTs with the new IRG4BC15UD, IRG4BC15UD-S, and IRG4BC20UD-S. The IRG4BC15UD, and IRG4BC15UD-S deliver up to 5.5A or 1.1kW with a smaller silicon die than previously available devices with the same efficiency level. The new Co-Pack IGBTs offer the best dollar-per-ampere value for very cost-sensitive applications such as appliance motor drives. In addition, International Rectifier is now offering its popular IRG4BC20UD in a D2Pak surface mountable version, the IRG4BC20UD-S, for power levels up to 1.3kW.

The new Co-Pack IGBTs are optimized for appliance motor drive applications such as variable speed fans, blowers, refrigeration compressors and washing machine pumps and agitators. The new devices enable the appliance industry to reduce energy consumption at a lower cost.

The new ultra-fast Co-Pack IGBTs are capable of switching at speeds up to 20kHz in hard-switching applications without any compromise in efficiency, and offer the most cost-effective solution for frequencies in the 8-20kHz range.

Arnold Alderman, International Rectifier Motor Drive Marketing Manager, said, "In appliance applications, motor drive designers increase frequency up to 20kHz to reduce the size and cost of passive components. These higher frequencies also reduce undesirable audible noise. The new ultra-fast Co-Pack IGBTs provide a low-cost alternative for higher frequency designs without compromising overall performance."

The 600V IGBTs are co-packaged with HEXFRED® ultra-fast, ultra-soft recovery anti-parallel diodes. The ultra-fast and ultra-soft diode recovery reduces or eliminates snubber components and minimizes switching losses as well as noise and EMI. These Co-Pack IGBTs are specifically designed for use in the bridge configurations typically used in appliance motor drives.

International Rectifier's IGBTs do not require negative biased turn-off drive, unlike other IGBTs on the market. International Rectifier's devices can simplify drive circuits by eliminating the negative voltage power supply, and allow the use of high voltage gate driver ICs such IR210x Series. For design flexibility, or simplified replacement in existing designs, IR IGBTs can also be used in negative-biased turn-off drive circuits.

"The high voltage gate driver ICs such IR210x Series are the perfect companion driver IC to the new IRG4BC15UD, IRGABC15UD-S and IRGABC20UD-S IGBTs for simple, cost-effective appliance motor drives," adds Alderman.
