International Rectifier Introduces New Control IC for Cost-Effective, On-Board Power Conversion Demands

EL SEGUNDO, CA. May 2001 - International Rectifier Corp. (IR®) (NYSE: IRF) today introduced the new IRU3037 synchronous buck controller IC. The new device is a key element in low-cost synchronous buck regulators for on-board DC-DC converter applications in low-voltage, high-current power systems. Typical DC-DC converter applications include accelerated graphics port (AGP) circuits in desktop computers, application-specific ICs (ASICs) and digital signal processors (DSPs).

Reza Amirani, Vice President of Marketing, DC-DC Control ICs, said, "Today's high-performance embedded processor products require 1.8 volts and lower supply voltages with current in excess of three amps. The new IRU3037 can team up with IR's small outline HEXFET® power MOSFETs such as the IRF7313, IRF7311 or IRF7752 to create a complete synchronous buck converter for 1.8 volt-output, 5 volt- or 3.3 volt-input systems."

The IRU3037 includes a soft start feature that allows smooth start-up from idle to decrease transients caused by inrush current and overshoot. The new control IC enables single-supply operation from 5V or 12V inputs, with an input range of 4V to 25V. The IRU3037 is fully protected with output undervoltage detection that latches off the device when an output short is detected.

Pricing and Availability
Pricing for the new IRU3037 is US $0.90 each in 1,000-unit quantities. The IRU3037CF is housed in the low-profile TSSOP-8 package, and the IRU3037CS is housed in the SO-8.

The HEXFET power MOSFETs mentioned above, the IRF7313 and IRF7311, are US $1.60 each, while the IRF7752 is $1.07 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
