EL SEGUNDO, CA. August 1998 - Seventy new high-reliability (high-rel) Schottky diodes for the military, aerospace and transportation markets are being added to the International Rectifier (NYSE: IRF) High-Reliability Components Group offering.

The new Schottky diodes offer improved performance, broader rating ranges and greater package selection than ever before. The new line-up includes devices screened for QPL and S-Level, space-qualified applications, as well as 100- and 150-volt rated devices unique to the high-rel industry.

The new plastic-packaged Schottky rectifiers have 30-, 45-, 60-, 100- and 150-volt reverse breakdown voltage ratings, with current ratings from 15 to 120 amps. The new devices come in single- and common-cathode configurations.

According to Richard Southwell, International Rectifier HiRel Components Group Marketing Manager, "Satellite power system bus voltages are rising to 60 and 100 volts. As voltage goes up, current goes down, reducing weight and size of electrical system components, including wiring harnesses. The new 100- and 150-volt devices match the 60- and 100-volt satellite power systems."

For example, in a typical design application with a duty cycle of 40 percent and reverse voltage of 55 percent, a power loss improvement of up to 11 percent can be expected at an operating junction temperature of 125 degrees Celsius. The device's efficiency improves by 14 percent when the temperature is 110 degrees C.

Six package styles - SMD-0.5, SMD-1, D-2, D-3, TO-257 and TO-254 - will help circuit designers maximize layout for optimum power density. The three-lead TO-257 and TO-254 packages are offered in ceramic or glass seals. Several new products are improved versions of existing devices in smaller packages. Smaller packages are important in the military, aerospace and transportation markets, since smaller devices contribute to improved circuit performance, increased power density and less overall weight.
