INTERNATIONAL RECTIFIER - THE POWER MANAGEMENT LEADER

International Rectifier's Omnirel Business Unit Introduces New High Current, Low Dropout RAD-HardTM Linear Regulator Delivers Less Than 0.4 Volts Dropout at 3 Amps in Spacecraft and High-Radiation Environments

Leominster, MA. July 2000 - Omnirel, an International Rectifier (NYSE: IRF) company, introduces the new OMR9601SCK, a 3.3 to 2.5V ultra-low dropout linear regulator with 3A capability. It features a maximum dropout voltage of 0.4V at 3A output and a 0.3V dropout at 1A output. The new regulator features a remote shutdown pin, useful for power sequencing and other control functions. The OMR9601SCK is housed in a five-pin TO-258 (MO-78AA), and comes with integrated input and output capacitors. The new regulator is radiation-hardened to 1MRad (Si), and is screened to class K standards as outlined in MIL-PRF-38534.

The high-current regulators are used in commercial, scientific and military satellite power systems where point-of-load regulation is required, such as digital signal processors (DSP), microcontrollers and microprocessors, and low-voltage logic circuits, including field programmable gate array (FPGA) systems.

Dennis Buchenholz, Vice President of Sales for Omnirel products, said, "The new OMR9601SCK linear regulator includes built-in input and output capacitors, and is characterized for both high and low radiation performance."

Omnirel worked with Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Lockheed Martin and other space electronics firms to develop the new OMR9601SCK linear regulator. The new 1MRrad (Si) device was created after extensive ionizing radiation dose rate testing on linear devices under a wide range of electrical and environmental conditions. While the device has been characterized per MIL-STD-883, Method 1019, conditionA (high dose rate), it has also been fully tested and characterized under very low dose rate conditions to document the extremely low dose rate symptoms (ELDRS) effect on bipolar linear devices. The graph shown below identifies the typical output voltage trend, out to 1 MRad (Si) total dose, for a dose rate of 0.1 rad (Si)/sec.
