International Rectifier Introduces Industry’s First Synchronous Rectification Controller IC
EL SEGUNDO, CA. March 2001 - International Rectifier (IR®) has announced the availability of the IR1175S, the industry’s first single-chip, application-specific IC (ASIC) designed for DC-DC conversion and regulation (synchronous rectification) in switch-mode power supply (SMPS) circuits.
The IR1175S simplifies DC-DC converter circuits and increases efficiency by “locking” primary- and secondary-side switch timing and duration. This new analog ASIC provides optimized gate drive for the synchronous rectifier MOSFETs in the secondary-side of an isolated DC-DC converter. This secondary-side predictive switching concept reduces parasitic diode losses, for enhanced performance.
David Tam, Power IC Group vice president says, “The new IR1175S is one of the easiest and most practical ways to implement more efficient synchronous rectification. The new ASIC works with DC-DC converter-optimized MOSFETs such as the IRF7463 and allows designers to create 90 percent-efficient and lower-cost 3.3-volt output DC-DC converters.”
DC-DC converters are used in power supplies for telecommunications, cell phone sites and mainframe computers. IR is developing more power conversion ASICs with secondary-side predictive switching to include a broader range of output voltages and power levels.
Pricing for the new IR1175S is US $2.95 each in 10,000-unit quantities. Samples of the IR1175S synchronous rectification IC are available now. Visit our DC-DC website for more information on IR’s newest application-specific devices, including the new line of DC-DC conversion HEXFET® MOSFETs.
