International Rectifier DC-DC Power Supply MOSFETs Achieve 90 Percent Efficiency Under Load
EL SEGUNDO, CA. January 2000 - International Rectifier (IR®), announced the availability of highly efficient, HEXFET® power MOSFETs for the PC, telecom, datacom and industrial power supply market.
The new application-specific MOSFETs are optimized for switch-mode power supply DC-DC conversion circuits, enabling designers to surpass 90 percent efficiency ratings.
Chesley Chao, Power Supply Business Development Manager, says, "IR's new DC-DC conversion MOSFETs, along with the IR1175S synchronous rectification IC (SRIC) are efficient, complementary building blocks for switch-mode power supplies."
"For example, the new IRFS31N20D is a 200V MOSFET for primary-side DC-DC conversion. The IRFBL3703 is a 30V MOSFET for secondary-side, synchronous rectification. When the IRFS31N20D is used with the new IRFBL3703, typical commercial 3.3 volt DC-DC power supply efficiency under load can exceed 91 percent at 30 amps output," Chao continues.
IR's DC-DC-optimized MOSFETs are so efficient, they can reduce overall parts count and cost while achieving similar or better efficiency over competing devices. For example, typical synchronous rectification DC-DC converters require several 30V MOSFETs in parallel to obtain the required output current. However, four 30V IRF7455 synchronous rectification-optimized MOSFETs can replace six of the "industry best" power MOSFETs in a DC-DC converter.

Pricing for the new primary-side MOSFETs begins at US $0.46 each in 10,000-unit quantities. Pricing for secondary-side MOSFETs starts at US $0.55 each in similar quantities.
