AC-DC SMPS requirements have changed and so rectification silicon must change to meet the system needs.
Historically, Schottky diodes were suitable as output rectification for medium/high power density SMPS.
Significant efficiency and power density improvements can be gained by replacing traditional Schottky rectification with synchronous rectification MOSFETs.
International Rectifier’s 75V and 100V HEXFET® MOSFETs, which have very low on-resistance (IRFB4310 RDS(on) =7mΩ at 100V; and the IRFB3207 RDS(on) =4.5mΩ at 75V) and good body diode performance, are specifically designed for AC-DC synchronous rectification in high efficiency and power density SMPS for server, desktop and laptop adaptors.
In addition, the new MOSFETs are suitable for DC-DC, low voltage motor drive and automotive applications.
In AC-DC application, the MOS figure of merit RDS(on) x Qg is only half of the story.
The body-diode contributes to the over all efficiency of the system as shown with better equivalent trr and Qrr specifications.
