Input Rectification

The input rectifier bridge is designed for AC full wave rectification for either single phase or three-phase applications. Single-phase brides are used in primary rectification in most electronic equipment. Three-phase bridges, often called modules, are commonly used in inverters, welders, and other industrial applications. Diodes used for the input rectifier bridge have to withstand surge currents, but since the AC line switches at about 60Hz, they are usually standard recovery diodes. International Rectifier has a line of SafeIR™ input diodes. These diodes have a voltage rating of 800V for 120/220V mains, 1200 for 380V mains and 1600 for 440/525 volt mains. These devices also come in surface mount packages. SafeIR devices have been developed to operate in heavy industrial environments. and have been tested according to the International Standards for Surge Immunity.

Present standards require that devices withstand up to 4000 volt spikes applied between phases. A typical solution is to use a voltage suppressor before the input filter and diodes. The use of the SafeIR product line in the input bridge may eliminate the voltage filter suppressors.

Additionally, IR has bridges which save production time by eliminating the need to assemble individual rectifiers into the bridge configuration. Encapsulated in a rugged, high thermal-conductivity package, the modules undergo voltage, current, temperature and humidity testing to ensure reliable performance in applications operating in extreme environments. These modules have industry-standard pin-outs and universal three-way terminals.
