AC-DC Desktop Primary
International Rectifier has several product families that address AC-DC primary switch applications, depending on power supply power level, performance and topology. Many SMPS configurations are suitable to fulfill the power range for Desktop computer applications, typically up to 400W.
The single- or double-transistor forward topology, well known for its robustness, simplicity, and moderately high performance, is widely used for power up to 200W.
The half bridge converter uses transformer flux in both directions, and therefore the transformer is smaller compared to the single forward converter. The half bridge is suitable for power up to 250W.
The full bridge converter, typical for high power applications, employs four different switches to reverse the voltage at the transformer windings and exploits the transformer flux in both directions, similar to the half bridge topology.
