AC-DC Adaptor Primary
Many different SMPS configurations are suitable to fulfill the power range for adapter applications, typically up to 200W. The flyback converter is one of the simplest and most economical SMPS power supply topologies, best for lower power levels up to 100W.
The single- or double-transistor forward topology, well known for its robustness, simplicity, and moderately high performance, is widely used for power up to 200W; therefore these are the topology tailored for enclosed application such as SMPS for laptop computers, printers, LCD monitors and Hi-Fi stereo systems.
The various circuit topologies demand two basic characteristics of the HEXFET® power MOSFETs used in this application: low gate charge and low device on-resistance. This is necessary to achieve high efficiency and reduce the size of the power supply.
International Rectifier has several product families that address AC-DC primary switch requirements depending on power level, performance and topology of the power supply.
